Money is usually a concern for employees who suffer from a severe illness or get hurt on the job. Workers’ compensation can help with expenses no matter what type of health issue you have.

Depending on your sickness, you qualify for either short-term or long-term disability. Here is some information you should know about the latter.

Long-term disability options

Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income exist on the national level. You may be able to take advantage of both SSDI and SSI at the same time in what we call a concurrent claim.

At the state level, there is workers’ compensation. These benefits are sometimes granted on a short-term basis. That said, they might extend for years or even until death. In the Bay State, you also have the Massachusetts State Supplement Program. Accessing SSP requires that you meet the bar for accepting SSI.

Workers may also buy supplemental private insurance as part of their benefits package.

Long-term disability qualifications

To qualify for LTD, you must have a condition that prevents you from working. This covers a long list of ailments that includes:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Narcolepsy
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Fibromyalgia

A doctor must complete a diagnosis for you to be eligible. A professional who has experience can verify that you have adequate and proper proof.

The stress of lacking funds because of an inability to work can be overwhelming. It is for that reason that these programs exist. Avoid financial catastrophe by taking advantage of these benefits as soon as the need arises.

Don’t Wait. Insurers only have 14 days to pay or deny your claim. Learn how to improve your chances of having your claim approved.
